T

he discovery of a West Java woman in critical condition after years of alleged confinement and abuse has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stronger protections against gender-based violence.

Police on Tuesday arrested a man suspected of holding and mistreating the woman, identified only as YTR, 29, from Rancaekek, Bandung regency.

West Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Rudi Setiawan confirmed that officers arrested 30-year-old Taufik Hidayat in Majalaya, Bandung regency, after tracing his digital footprint through a series of online transactions.

“After seeing [Taufik’s online transactions], the team in Majalaya searched around a housing area and, finally, in the evening, managed to find and arrest him,” Rudi said on Tuesday, as reported by Antara.

The arrest came on the same day that Taufik was named a suspect and placed on the police wanted list for allegedly abducting, unlawfully confining and physically abusing his girlfriend, YTR.
