View all search resultsJatam recorded 71 conflicts related to mining operations between 2014 and 2019, despite the decline in mining permit issuance by the government from around 12,000 permits in 2013 to around 8,000 permits in 2019.
One of the banners used during the protest was emblazoned with the words “Jokowi, help us. Reject the proposal for a mining road traversing the remaining forest area in South Sumatra-Jambi borders”.
The long-delay in the issuance of the new regulation has not only caused legal uncertainty but also threatens six major mining firms in Kalimantan, which together account for almost 40 percent of national coal production of more than 500 million tons a year.
