Simply bringing countries together does not guarantee any results. But it creates opportunities. In recent years, ASEM has become increasingly relevant and strategic. This ASEM meeting will be an important opportunity to further strengthen cooperation between Europe and Asia.
The issue of refugees and asylum seekers traveling to Australia from Indonesia has long been a sensitive aspect of the countries’ bilateral relationship. To ameliorate its frustrations, Australia has actively sought to mold Indonesia’s foreign and domestic policies on this issue. However under President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Indonesia appears to be distancing itself from Australia and devising policy solutions independently.
Defining a country’s foreign policy is definitely not an easy feat. Nevertheless, it is of great importance. The public must not be left stranded in no man’s land, not knowing how to define its own government’s foreign policy or understand its intentions. Allowing this to happen, and fostering participatory diplomacy or grassroots diplomacy would be increasingly challenging.
The public policy and political culture of Costa Rica have created a long-standing democracy and a stable republic in Central America. Costa Rica remains one of the few countries without a standing army of any kind and only maintains national police forces.
Korea’s New Southern Policy is indeed a future-oriented foreign policy based on empirical observation of ASEAN-Korea relations over the past three decades. Thirty years ago when the world was on the verge of a new international order at the end of the Cold War, ASEAN and Korea tied the knot as sectoral dialogue partners. In 1989, bilateral trade volume was a mere $8.2 billion. Since then, however, this figure has increased exponentially.
Belgium and Indonesia were selected as nonpermanent members of the UN Security Council for the 2019-2020 period (together with Germany, South Africa and the Dominican Republic), which means the two countries will work even more closely together. Consolidation of our 70-year relationship and our mutual commitment to world peace, the environment and gender equality?
