After days of bad weather last week initially impeded relief efforts, authorities said they have managed to deliver some 5.2 tonnes of food aid and emergency kit to drought-stricken Agandugume district in Central Papua.
Six have died since June in the mountainous Puncak district in Central Papua due to a snowy season that was immediately followed by a prolonged dry season that hit crops. Access to the region is hampered by difficult terrain and threats posed by armed separatists, authorities said.
A weather station in the Xinjiang region's Sanbao village "recorded a temperature peak of 52.2 degrees Celsius at 19:00 on July 16, breaking the historic heat record for the same period of the year", the China Meteorological Administration said in a statement.
