View all search resultsGold miner Agincourt Resources, part of diversified conglomerate Astra International, was recently given the go-ahead from the Environment Ministry and the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry to resume operations at its Martabe gold mine in North Sumatra, following an earlier sanction over alleged environmental breaches. However, reports reveal that neither ministry had ever issued a decree to formally revoke Agincourt’s business permits.
If the illegal gold mining activities in Sangihe remain unchallenged, it will encourage and embolden the collusion and corruption of unscrupulous state and non-state actors to continue the practice in other parts of the country.
The Sangihe Islands deputy regent was a staunch and vocal opponent of the gold mine concession located on Sangihe Island that was granted to PT Tambang Mas Sangihe in North Sulawesi's archipelagic regency.
