The proposed 2019 state budget is designed to face a worst-case scenario of rupiah depreciation of up to 35 percent -- Rp 18,000 per US dollar --, particularly related to anticipated ballooning government debt due to the rupiah weakening.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has responded to criticism raised by People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Zulkifli Hasan on the government's debt, saying that a recent Rp 396 trillion (US$27.15 billion) payment was to cover 44 percent of a debt incurred before President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo took office.
The Finance Ministry recorded Rp 4.25 quadrillion (US$290.33 billion) of government debt in July, slightly higher than the figure in the previous month, said Finance Ministry financing and risk director general Luky Alfirman on Tuesday.
In an election year, many analysts, notably opposition politicians — tend to assess the government’s economic performance and its key indicators through the prism of politics. Take for example, the detractors who have been trumpeting that the government’s debt level is already at a critical state. They point out that within the first three years of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration, government debt has nominally increased by the same amount that the previous government accumulated within five years.
