BNN Chief Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom stated that Indonesia is witnessing a rising trend in transnational drug trafficking, with popular tourist destinations, especially Bali, becoming prime targets.
The relatively light sentence demand for an Argentine woman and British man on trial for drug trafficking at a Denpasar court reflects a growing trend of leniency toward foreigners charged with drug offenses in recent years since a moratorium on executions in 2017.
The defendants, formerly with the Barelang Police narcotics unit including its chief, were convicted for their involvement in smuggling 44 kg of meth and orchestrating a fake drug bust to steal 9 kg of the narcotic to sell via dealers for personal profit.
The proposed Indonesian Military (TNI) amendment bill has sparked criticism from civil society groups, who argue that involving the military in drug enforcement contradicts the spirit of reform. They warn that this move could revive the military's dual-function role and threaten democracy.
