Civil society is now pushing for online taxis to be exempted from the odd-even number plate policy to benefit commuters who do not own private vehicles.
The policy is part of the Jakarta administration’s efforts to negotiate a fine balance between imposing strict mobility curbs and allowing crucial economic activities to continue in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jakarta is considering reimposing the odd-even license plate policy for private cars as traffic returns. But concerns have grown that the policy might force people to shift to public transportation, which could lead to passengers overcrowding the transit networks, increasing the risk of coronavirus transmission.
