View all search resultsPeatland was there long before people settled in the area, and that peatland is flammable. People, therefore, have to adjust themselves to the circumstances. So, there have to be constant efforts to remind people of these facts. Vulnerability should be translated into caution, being aware that the daily practices of people could harm the peatland, exposing themselves to dangerous situations leading to suffering. The constant reminder or awareness-raising process is a way to form a new “habitus”.
According to the Environment and Forestry Ministry’s law enforcement division, the office has sent as many as 210 warning letters to companies registered as peatland concession holders about alleged negligence that led to forest fires.
Facing the annual threat of wildfires, Indonesia has set an ambitious target to restore and rewet 1.1 million hectares of critical peatland located on non-concession land, which includes conservation and protected forests, by 2020.
