View all search resultsPresident Jokowi issued a regulation in 2016 that pledged to lower gas prices to $6 per MMBtu. The pledge was meant to boost the growth of seven gas-reliant industrial sectors namely electricity production, chemicals, food, ceramics, steel, fertilizers and glass manufacturing, which collectively consume about 80 percent of Indonesia’s gas supply.
The decision to cancel the price hike came from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, which owns a majority of PGN through state-owned energy holding company Pertamina. In a carefully worded statement, PGN said the ministry’s decision was regrettable because the company would have used the higher revenue margins to finance expanding its gas distribution network.
PGN corporate secretary Rachmat Hutama said the company was now building new transmission and distribution pipelines and is converting the fuel used by the oil refineries of its holding company, Pertamina, from oil to natural gas.
