On April 26, 1986, a nuclear reactor at the plant near the city of Pripyat, Ukraine, exploded. The fire burned for 10 days, spewing a radioactive plume that stretched across Europe, as far as Ireland and Greece. The immediate area around the reactor was evacuated, and a 30-kilometre radius exclusion zone has remained in place for almost 36 years.
The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten) has said that the radiation level in part of the Batan Indah housing complex in South Tangerang has returned to normal after radioactive material was discovered in an empty plot of land in the complex in February.
The National Police’s criminal investigation department (Bareskrim) discovered more radioactive materials at the Batan Indah housing complex in South Tangerang, Banten, on Friday – one month after authorities made a similar discovery in the same residential area.
A resident of South Tangerang, Banten, who allegedly kept radioactive substances in his house at the Batan Indah housing complex did so for economic gain, the National Police have said, and had been engaged in business involving radioactive substances.
