View all search resultsThe government has agreed to import 1 million tonnes of rice from India in a move that it says is necessary to ensure a sufficient supply of the staple food amid an increased risk of poor harvests this year.
The government needs to pay close attention to 12 indicators in accordance with Law No. 18 of 2012 concerning food to avoid maladministration in deciding about rice imports following recent changes, the Indonesian Ombudsman has warned.
The issue of imported versus locally produced rice is again creating a rift between the government and local farmers as the government aims to meet the deadline for finalizing its 2023 demand and supply planning.
Despite adding India as another import origin country, Indonesia will not increase its meat, rice and raw sugar imports from the current volume, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said.
