View all search resultsScam compounds have mushroomed in Myanmar's borderlands and are staffed by foreigners who are often trafficked and forced to work, swindling their compatriots in an industry analysts say is worth billions of dollars.
The Riau Islands BP3MI revealed that around 5,300 people seeking better-paying jobs had been recruited as migrant workers under false pretenses and trafficked to Cambodia, where they were forced to work for scamming or online gambling operations.
Between 2020 and September this year, Jakarta repatriated more than 4,700 Indonesians entangled in online scam operations from countries including Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, according to Foreign Ministry's data.
