While it is true that the best things to enjoy on the Gilis is just to not do anything and stay on the beach, the islands also offer many other exciting activities for their visitors.
slice of heaven on Earth, the Gili islands -- Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air -- never fail to attract visitors who come from all around the world, drawn to their stunning shorelines, white sands, turquoise waters and amazing marine life.
While it is true that one of the best things to enjoy on the Gilis is just to not do anything and stay on the beach, the islands also offer many other exciting activities for their visitors. Below are some of them:
Snorkeling
The best thing about snorkeling around the Gili islands is you can get access to the snorkeling spots by swimming from the beach without having to hire a boat. Once in the water, expect to marvel at amazing marine life with colorful corals and various tropical fish and other sea creatures including the one that you shouldn’t miss, the turtle.
If you want to spend most of the time snorkeling, make sure to book a stay near the spot as not all the beaches are good destinations for snorklers. You can ask the cidomo (horse cart) driver to take you to nearby hotels if you don’t have any bookings, or contact the staff of your preferred hotel about whether the location is not far from a snorkeling spot.
Cycling
Since any vehicles with engines are not allowed on the Gilis, cycling is the best way to explore the surrounding areas. You can follow the roads along the shorelines, or explore the islands' secret alleys that will take you through the villages and its laid-back life. Do note that most parts of the road are covered with sand, so make sure to rent a bike with bigger tires so you don’t have to push it when crossing loose surfaces.
Kayaking
Taking your traveling friend on a kayak (or just kayaking alone) in the Gilis' quiet waters can be a good idea for an outdoor activity around the islands. Kayaking is also the best way to challenge yourself to explore the islands’ surrounding water.
Try to rent a transparent kayak so you can see the colorful corals and fish through its bottom. If you are brave enough, explore further to see the turtles swimming beneath you.
Diving
Of course, diving is a must-do activity when visiting the Gilis. Although it is known that the currents are quite strong in between the islands, you don’t have to worry as there are a lot of spots that suit all levels of divers.
Aside from turtles, expect to spot some reef sharks, passing manta rays, octopus and much more. Consider diving at night to be able to enjoy the silvery sparkling water under the moonlight.

Partying on a boat
This is probably the most exciting thing to do at the Gilis. For about Rp 350,000 (US$30), you can jump on a big boat and party ‘til you drop while enjoying an amazing view of the blue sea and brilliant sunset.
Some of the services available to do this activity include the Boat Party (www.bestboatpartybali.com) or the South Sea Nomads (www.southseanomads.com) if you want to charter the whole catamaran. (kes)
