Bandung to host Independence Day Carnival

andung has been appointed as the host of the 72ndAnniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day Carnival that will be held on August 26.

With the theme "Nyalakan Api Semangat Kerja Bersama" (Fire Up the Spirit of Working Together), the event will invite artists and historical experts from all across the nation to partake in the event.

“The carnival will serve as the closing event of the Independence Day celebration,” said Minister of State Secretariat, Pratikno.

“This is the final event, after the parade there will be stage performances at Juang Monument where the people’s party will be held,” added Tourism Minister, Arief Yahya.

President Joko Widodo and First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo are set to attend the carnival.

Prior to the carnival there will be other events that will be held to attract visitors such as wayang golek performance for students at Pendopo on August 19, Bandung Run 2017 on August 20 and Braga Culinary Night on August 20.

The carnival itself will start from Simpang Lima and then headed to Savoy Homann, Merdeka Building and will finish at the Bandung Square. 

Several atractions that will be featured in the parade include marching band, an antique car that belonged to the first Indonesian president, flag-hoisting team, scout kids, local people of West Java, Pencak Silat performance, gold-decorated chariot, lingkung seni Dangiang Galuh Pakuan, kuda renggong Sumedang, Keraton Kapangranan Gebang Cigugur and Historia Van Bandung.

Indonesian Veterans Legion (LVRI) along with the Antique Bicycle Community and Indonesian Antique Cars Fan Association are also scheduled to take part.

Morover, there will be a kampung adat (customary village) and a cultural parade that will highlight the cultures of Cigugur Kuningan, Kampung Naga Salawu Tasik, Kampung Adat Kuta Ciamis, Kampung Ujung Jaya Kadipaten Rancakalong Sumedang, Negara Banceuy Subang, Dukuh Pamengpeuk Garut, Cikondang Ciwidey, Adat Ciptagelar Sukabumi, Cangkuang Garut, Mahumud in Bandung regency, Kampung Urug Bogor, Kampung Adat Giri Jaya Gunung Halimun Sukabumi, Kampung Budaya Sindang Barang Bogor and  Keraton Sumedang Larang.

Tourism Ministry's Archipelago Marketing Development deputy Esthy Reko Astuti said that the 72nd Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day is a reflection of civic life (berbangsa dan bernegara) that is participated by all walks of life.

In the past, the celebratory event was known as a Cultural Carnival, an annual carnival that was held at the Presidential Palace and joined by all 34 Indonesian provinces. However, since the 2015 the rule has been changed as the venue is not just limited to the capital city but alternating between cities in Indonesia. 

“Last year it was called Lake Toba Independence Day Charm Carnival and held at Balige, Toba Samosir. Prior to that, it was called Equator Carnival that was held in Pontianak, West Sumatra,” said Esthy. (asw)
