orth Korea has fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan, its first launch of a projectile since last October, the Japanese and South Korean governments said Wednesday.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch took place around 8:10 a.m. and its military was closely monitoring the situation in cooperation with the United States.
"It is presumed that it (the projectile) has landed outside our country's exclusive economic zone," Japan's Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi told reporters. "What appeared to be a ballistic missile was launched from an inland (area in) North Korea toward the east."
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that it is deplorable that North Korea has repeatedly launched missiles since last year.
UN Security Council resolutions ban North Korea from employing ballistic missile technology.
North Korea last launched a projectile in October 2021, when it test-fired a new type of submarine-launched ballistic missile, adding to concern over the nuclear-armed nation's technological advances in hard-to-intercept weapons.
