everal more explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Thursday, after an initial series of sounds similar to artillery fire, a Reuters witness reported.

The sounds were heard shortly after Russia announced a military operation in Ukraine.

A Russian invasion of Ukraine appears to be underway, a NATO official told Reuters on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Very much looks like it's begun," the official said.

A series of explosions was heard in the Belgorod province of Russia which borders Ukraine, a witness told Reuters, shortly after Moscow announced a military operation in Ukraine.
