krainian Ambassador to Indonesia Vasyl Hamianin has said he appreciates Indonesia’s position in speaking out against the invasion of Ukraine, but added that he hoped Jakarta would express a stronger stance in regard to Russia’s role in escalating the conflict.
Hamianin’s remark came after the Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the military attack on Ukraine, calling it “unacceptable” and further called on “all parties” to cease hostilities and to peacefully resolve the conflict, notably leaving out any specific reference to Russia’s actions.
Speaking to The Jakarta Post on Friday, Hamianin said a “sounder” position taken by Indonesia over the Russo-Ukrainian conflict would go a long way in helping to deescalate the situation, given Indonesia’s influential standing in the global community, including as the current president of the Group of 20.
“I am grateful to the Indonesian government for issuing the statement on this situation in Ukraine […] It implies very clearly that aggression toward Ukraine cannot be tolerated,” said Hamianin, adding, however, that the Indonesian government did not explicitly address Russia in its statements that condemned the invasion.
“I do hope that Indonesian reaction in condemnation of Russian aggression would be sounder. And more directed toward the aggressor. […] The voice of Indonesia must be heard by the world community, because Indonesia is a country that is becoming one of the global leaders, and Indonesia’s G20 presidency confirms this.”

After months of building up its presence along its borders with Ukraine, Russia launched multipronged attacks on Thursday into Ukraine in a move that President Vladimir Putin said was part of a “special military operation” after rebel leaders in Eastern Ukraine had asked Moscow for military help against Kyiv.
