s the two countries draw closer, France has renewed its commitment to support both Indonesia’s energy transition, as well as sustainable finance – all part of an effort to increase its development portfolio in the Indo-Pacific region.

The French Development Agency (AFD) director general Rémy Rioux visited Jakarta on Monday to reaffirm that his country is prioritizing support for Indonesia’s energy transition and promoting sustainable finance.

“We want to be helpful and provide something specific; additionally, we wish to build long-term relationships with institutions beyond the finance project,” he said, after meeting with key Indonesian officials in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Under the agreement, the AFD has committed to mobilize 1.3 million euros (US$1.4 million) to finance feasibility studies and strengthen the capacity of state-owned electricity company PLN agents to develop wind farms located in Pandeglang, Banten.

The project would increase the existing capacity of renewable energy generation, and eventually reduce carbon emissions. PLN’s pre-feasibility study estimated that the potential for wind power amounts to 350 megawatts; in the first phase, PLN plans to build a wind farm with a capacity of 200 MW.

“This is one of our commitments to achieving mixed energy targets that are also in line with reducing global emissions; the Banten wind farm has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 540,000 tons of CO2 [carbon dioxide] per year,” PLN chief Darmawan Prasodjo said.

He said the project would begin this year, with the aim to begin operation by 2025.
