Indonesia was chosen to host the summit during the fourth AIS Forum ministerial meeting in Bali last December. The summit is scheduled to take place on the island on Oct. 10 and 11.
The AIS Forum was established by the Indonesian government on the sidelines of the United Nations Ocean Conference in 2017. It gathers 51 archipelagic and island countries in the Pacific and Caribbean to cooperate on maritime issues, including climate crisis mitigation and marine pollution.
The summit is expected to produce five deliverables, including the AIS Forum Declaration with the theme of solidarity and the blue economy, said Abdul Wahib Situmorang, AIS program manager and senior advisor for climate and environmental governance.
The blue economy refers to the sustainable use and conservation of marine resources for economic growth and welfare improvement.
