S Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Prabowo Subianto, who was on Wednesday officially declared the winner of last month's presidential election.

Blinken said: "We extend our sincere congratulations to Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto on his victory and once again applaud the Indonesian people for their robust turnout and commitment to democracy and the rule of law."

Defence Minister Prabowo won nearly 60 percent of votes in the world's third-largest democracy.

Last week, US President Joe Biden also congratulated Prabowo on his likely win in the Feb. 14 presidential election and said that he looked forward to strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

Biden sent the congratulatory message through US Ambassador to ASEAN Yohannes Abraham, who personally delivered a handwritten letter to Prabowo during a meeting in Jakarta.

"I want to extend my congratulations to the people of Indonesia on a successful election...and to you for your lead in the presidential vote count," Biden wrote in the letter, which he signed on March 12.

Biden is one of the last foreign leaders to congratulate Prabowo on his likely election win. Leaders of neighboring countries including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Prabowo hours after the unofficial "quick count" put him in the lead in the vote count.
