efense Minister Prabowo Subianto told Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday that he was determined to build on President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s achievements with China as a “foundation” for his programs once he becomes Indonesia’s eighth president.

Prabowo held closed-door talks with Xi at the Grand Hall in Beijing in what has been billed as an unusual pre-inauguration visit, his first overseas trip since securing victory in the Feb. 14 general election.

“Once again I would like to emphasize that I would like to continue the policies of President Jokowi,” Prabowo told Xi in a video clip aired by state news outlet CCTV.

“I am determined to use all his achievements as a foundation for my programs. I fully support a closer and higher quality relationship between [China] and Indonesia.”

The three-day visit to China, at the invitation of Xi, comes barely two weeks after the General Elections Commission (KPU) confirmed Prabowo’s landslide victory in the closely watched presidential election.

The Gerindra Party chairman won on a campaign of continuity, as he looked to succeed the incumbent Jokowi, who was decisive in bringing Indonesia closer to China.

Prabowo will not be sworn in until October, barring any successful challenges to the election results at the Constitutional Court, but that has not stopped a wave of congratulatory messages from around the world, including from the United States and China.
