ndonesia is aiming to boost tourism and education cooperation with China amid efforts to rekindle historical ties and break negative stereotypes against the East Asian giant.

The plan was announced during the ASEAN-China Week 2024 organized by the ASEAN-China Centre from Aug. 12 to 15 in Changzhi, China. The forum was held to bring together government representatives and business entities to foster people-to-people exchanges, which became this year’s main cooperation between Southeast Asian countries and China.

Indonesia is targeting to attract more Chinese tourists to visit the Southeast Asian archipelagic country and strengthen cooperation on education, said Parulian Silalahi, the deputy chief of mission of the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing.

“We expect an increase in quality travelers from China with higher spending and longer stay duration in Indonesia,” Parulian told The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of the forum.

On tourism, Indonesia aims to draw 1.5 million Chinese tourists this year, doubling last year’s record of 788,000 visitors.

To achieve such a target, Indonesian airlines are expanding direct routes between the two countries. Last month, low-cost carrier Citilink launched its first direct flight between Jakarta and Chongqing in the southwest of China.
