ndonesia strongly condemned Israel's recent deadly attacks on Lebanon that have killed more than 500 people, including 50 children, and wounded thousands of others, while pushing for the safety of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which includes 1,232 Indonesian military personnel.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said such violence and aggression should not be “a new normal” and that the UN Security Council as well as the international community must take firm measures to push for de-escalation in the conflict-torn Middle East.

“Indonesia through its Embassy in Beirut continues to monitor the condition of its citizens in Lebanon and has prepared contingency measures to anticipate emergency conditions,” Retno said in a statement on Wednesday. The country’s top envoy spoke on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the United States.

She noted that Israel's offensive which started on Monday morning in Lebanon further escalated the situation in the Middle East, which is currently facing a humanitarian crisis stemming from Israel’s aggression in Gaza.

“The oppression of the Palestinian people is the root cause of the conflict, and peace in the Middle East will never be achieved without justice for Palestinians,” Retno emphasized.

The unabating violence in the Middle East has cast a dark pall on the week-long UNGA meeting in New York, as Israeli aggression on multiple fronts has continued to claim lives and draw global fury despite repeated calls for de-escalation.
