At least 70 Indonesian citizens, most of whom are students or those married to Lebanese nationals, refuse to be evacuated from Lebanon, according to the Indonesian Embassy in Beirut, despite the intensifying Israeli forces' attacks on the country.
The Indonesian Embassy in Beirut has evacuated 25 Indonesians from Lebanon, with some deciding to stay despite Israel’s recent deadly attacks on the country.
The Foreign Ministry and the embassy had helped the 25 Indonesian citizens emigrate from the country as of Thursday, said ministry spokesperson Rolliansyah “Roy” Soemirat. Seven others are currently taking shelter at the embassy compound in Beirut.
“The other Indonesians, most of whom are either students or those who are married to local people, decided to stay in Lebanon for personal reasons,” Roy said on Friday.
Previously, the embassy’s charge d'affaires Yosi Aprizal said that 70 Indonesians had reported their unwillingness to be evacuated from the country, submitting a letter declaring their personal responsibility for their security and safety.
Indonesian students in the Middle Eastern country had also received safety guarantees from their respective universities, Yosi said as reported by kompas.com.
The Indonesian embassy had imposed the highest emergency alert status for all parts of Lebanon since August. It expanded the red alert status declared for the southern part of the country that was first imposed in October of last year.
