P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has ordered the Foreign Ministry to immediately evacuate Indonesians from Lebanon as Israel intensifies a ground offensive against Iran-backed Hezbollah.

“I have told Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi to prioritize the safety of our citizens. Evacuation needs to be done immediately,” Jokowi told the media during a working visit to East Nusa Tenggara on Wednesday, as quoted from a video clip published by the Presidential Secretariat.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rolliansyah Soemirat said earlier on Wednesday that the process of “evacuating Indonesians is underway” and that Indonesian missions in the Middle East were continuing to monitor the situation closely.

“Indonesian embassies are also keeping up communications with every Indonesian in their respective jurisdictions,” he added.

He did not reveal how many Indonesians were being evacuated from Lebanon.

The embassy’s charge d'affaires, Yosi Aprizal, said last week that 70 Indonesians had reported their unwillingness to be evacuated from the country, submitting a letter declaring their personal responsibility for their safety. The embassy and the ministry have since warned all Indonesians still in the country to remain vigilant and steer clear of unsafe regions.
