Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi and Indonesian representatives at the United Nations have urged Israeli forces and other parties in the conflict in Lebanon to respect the inviolability, safety and security of UN peacekeeping forces.
he Foreign Ministry has condemned an Israeli military strike on the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Thursday that injured two Indonesian peacekeepers, calling for all parties in the war-torn region to prioritize the safety and security of UN forces.
In a statement on Thursday, UNIFIL reported that its headquarters in Naqoura in southern Lebanon had been hit by a shell from an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Merkava battle tank that landed directly on an observation tower, causing two peacekeepers to fall from the structure.
The two soldiers suffered minor injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital, said Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi, who condemned the attack in a recorded statement issued on Friday morning.
“Attacking UN personnel and properties is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council resolution 1701,” the minister said.
She was referring to a resolution issued in 2006 calling for a full cessation of hostilities between Israel and militant group Hezbollah after the 2006 Lebanon War and requiring UNIFIL and Lebanese armed forces to replace Israeli forces in the country.
Retno added that Indonesia’s permanent representative to the UN had reiterated the condemnation of the attack on the UNIFIL base during a UN Security Council (UNSC) briefing on the situation in the Middle East in New York, the United States, on Thursday afternoon local time.
“Our envoy said the assault was a terror attempt carried out by Israel against UN peacekeepers and the international community,” she said, urging all parties in Lebanon to respect UN premises’ inviolability under all conditions.
