Wong sat down with senior journalists to outline a plan to build on the close ties his predecessor had forged with Indonesia’s previous president.
ingapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong arrived in Jakarta on Monday to prepare for an “introductory meeting” with President Prabowo Subianto’s administration. Wong sat down to speak with The Jakarta Post’s editor-in-chief, M. Taufiqurrahman, and a few other senior journalists to outline a plan to build on the close ties his predecessor had forged with Indonesia’s previous president. The following are excerpts from the interview:
Question: How do you see the prospect of the relationship between Singapore and Indonesia under Prabowo Subianto’s presidency?
Answer: Well, we are confident about being able to strengthen our ties further. Pak Prabowo is a friend of Singapore. We know him well.
He's very familiar with Singapore. I have met him several times when he was a defense minister. Back in 2022 when I came to visit, I met him. And as defense minister, he helped us to advance our bilateral ties on defense and to secure the defense cooperation agreement, as well as the extended framework agreements.
He has many good friends in Singapore. Likewise, we have close links with him and we want to work with him and his new administration to strengthen the relationship.
Singapore is deeply and fully invested in Indonesia's success. So we will find ways to complement [it] in the projects that we do, to complement the new president’s priorities, for example around food, around energy or other priorities that he may have.
