F

rance reiterated its commitment to strengthening defense cooperation with Indonesia and working closely with the Southeast Asian nation to maintain regional stability during French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s visit to Jakarta on Friday.

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin welcomed his counterpart Lecornu with a military ceremony at his office in the morning, which was then followed by a closed-door meeting to discuss defense collaboration between the two nations.

Ministry spokesperson Frega Wenas Inkiriwang told reporters on Friday that the ministers had agreed on several key cooperations, including personnel exchange and training, joint military equipment production and technology transfer.

"The joint production of military equipment will facilitate technology transfer. This initiative is still in the exploratory stage, but aligns with the commitment made by President Prabowo Subianto [and his French counterpart] President Emmanuel Macron,” Frega explained.

Military cooperation between Indonesia and France has grown in recent years when Prabowo served as Indonesia’s defense minister.

The countries’ diplomatic defense commitment was further solidified when Prabowo and Macron held a bilateral meeting during the Group of 20 (G20) Summit in Brazil last November.
