The Navy has named its two Italian-made warships after historic kings, symbolizing the Navy's hopes, prayers and determination to defend the nation’s sovereignty and honor.
he Navy is set to receive its two largest, most powerful warships to date following their naming after two historic kings during a ceremony in the shipyard of Italian shipmaker Fincantieri.
The new multipurpose combat ships (MPCS) were named KRI Brawijaya, with pennant number 320, and KRI Prabu Siliwangi, with pennant number 321, during a ceremony led by Navy chief of staff Adm. Muhammad Ali in Muggiano, Italy, on Jan. 30.
The MPCS, referred to as PPA in Italian, represent a milestone in the Navy’s modernization and in maintaining the country’s sovereignty and security, the Navy said in a statement.
The procurement of both warships was the government’s commitment to strengthening national defense, especially for the Navy, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said in a written speech read by Ali.
Sjafrie added that the cooperation was a strategic partnership between Indonesia and international partners to produce modern and highly competitive weapons systems.
“Naming a ship is not just a formality but a strategic step in building a ship’s identity,” he said.
“The chosen names are symbols of hope, prayers and the determination to defend the nation’s sovereignty and honor across the oceans of the world.”
