Reynhard, the "worst-known sex offender" in the British history, made global headlines in 2020 when a court in the United Kingdom sentenced him to life imprisonment for at least 136 counts of rape.
he government is trying to repatriate Indonesian national Reynhard Sinaga, who was convicted of rape in the United Kingdom; a decision that sparked strong reactions from observers who questioned the urgency behind the plan.
Coordinating Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Correctional Services Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said that officials had started “early talks” with the British government for a possible prisoner exchange that would see Reynhard sent to Jakarta in return for British nationals jailed in Indonesia.
However, the plan is in its early stage, with officials from both sides still studying the procedures around the matter.
“We don’t fully understand the legal procedure in the UK, and they do not fully understand our legal procedures,” Yusril said in a video statement issued by his office on Thursday.
Reynhard, who will soon turn 42, made global headlines in January 2020 as the “most prolific rapist” in British history when he was sentenced to life sentence with a minimum term of 30 years for 136 counts of rape. A court of appeal increased the minimum term to 40 years in December 2020.
The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) called him the “worst-known sex offender” in the country’s history.
