resident Prabowo Subianto’s initiative to evacuate vulnerable persons from war-torn Gaza and transport them to Indonesia has continued to draw criticism following his return from a five-country Middle Eastern tour, even as his administration hinted this week that the President might go ahead with the plan.
From April 9 to 15, Prabowo visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Turkey, Egypt, Qatar and Jordan, in part to raise support for his evacuation plan.
Before departing on the diplomatic tour, the President emphasized Indonesia’s readiness to welcome 1,000 Palestinians, including injured and traumatized people as well as orphans, for medical treatment and educational opportunities.
Israel has resumed its military offensive in the Gaza Strip after the collapse of a temporary ceasefire from January to mid-March in the war against Islamist group Hamas, which has claimed over 50,000 lives since October 2023.
Prabowo’s plan has been met with caution from observers and local Islamic organizations, who say that it might inadvertently align with Israel and the United States’ plan to depopulate the exclave and turn it into the “Riviera of the Middle East” as described by US President Donald Trump.
The move has been widely condemned by the international community as a form of ethnic cleansing.
