ndonesia and Fiji promised to strengthen their ties, including in areas like agriculture and defense, during a bilateral meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Thursday.
Prabowo hosted Rabuka’s official visit following the prime minister’s arrival in Jakarta on Wednesday night. Prabowo was accompanied by Foreign Minister Sugiono, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi and Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto.
Prabowo highlighted the “very strong and good” relations between Indonesia and the Pacific Island country over the past few years. He noted the similarities between the two archipelagic nations.
“We have a common interest and face the same challenges posed by climate change, such as rising sea levels, which will also affect Indonesia,” Prabowo told Rabuka before they talked behind closed doors.
The President also reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to continue the development of an agricultural training center and demonstration farm in Fiji, a plan established in 2023 as a part of Indonesia’s initiative to strengthen food security in Fiji and the Pacific region through training and transfer of technology.
“I am committed to following up on our agreements from the previous government, and we look forward to closer cooperation with your government in various fields of economic development,” Prabowo said, noting his administration’s own attempt to attain food sufficiency in Indonesia.
The training center is set to be built sometime this year in Fiji’s Dobuilevu Research Station in Rakiraki district.
