The government has announced a plan to use Galang Island in Riau Islands to treat 2,000 displaced Palestinians injured during the war in Gaza, although it later clarified that some details about the proposal are still being finalized.

The plan was first announced by Presidential Communication Office (PCO) head Hasan Nasbi during a press briefing on Thursday. He told reporters that the government was preparing Galang, an 80 square-meter island in Riau Islands, to temporarily host and treat 2,000 injured Gazans.

Hasan added authorities would use the island’s existing infrastructure as part of the country’s humanitarian mission for Gaza, which include airdropping food and other aid for Gazans using two Hercules cargo aircraft.

“President [Prabowo Subianto] has given an order for Indonesia to assist in the medical treatment of 2,000 Gazans who have fallen victim to the war. They include individuals injured from bombardments, debris or other causes,” Hasan said, adding that the order was given during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

He added that accompanying families could be housed in the lodging facilities near the hospital.

Hasan also emphasized that the 2,000 patients from Gaza would not live permanently on the island: “This isn’t a permanent relocation. Upon the completion of their medical treatments, they will be returned to Gaza.”
