oreign Minister Sugiono met with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong on Tuesday to discuss further plans to deepen the two countries’ engagement, as she began her diplomatic tour to engage with Canberra’s Southeast Asian partners.

Indonesia and Australia are the “closest of partners and friends”, Wong asserted, while emphasizing the commitment of Anthony Albanese’s premiership to build on sustained engagement with ASEAN partners, as both countries work together to address key regional challenges.

Indonesia was Wong’s first destination on her ASEAN tour, arriving in Jakarta on Monday to discuss bilateral issues before continuing her trip to Vietnam. Wong’s visit to Indonesia and Vietnam focused on strengthening Australia’s economic, political and security ties as well as boosting its investment and trade relations with both countries.

“It is wonderful to be back in Jakarta to meet Foreign Minister Sugiono,” Wong wrote on her official social media accounts, alongside pictures of her and her Indonesian counterpart shaking hands.

“We discussed our close ties and how we can further deepen cooperation to shape our region for the better.”
