P

resident Prabowo Subianto is in New York, the United States, ahead of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) general debate after briefly stopping in Japan for the World Expo, with plans to visit Canada and the Netherlands after his UNGA appearance.

Prabowo arrived on Saturday afternoon in preparation for the world’s largest multilateral forum, where he will deliver a speech on the first day of the general debate on Tuesday after Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and US President Donald Trump.

Prabowo’s presence will mark the first time in over a decade that an Indonesian president has attended the general debate.

“This year’s general assembly is an important moment for Indonesia,” Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said, as quoted from a press release from the Presidential Secretariat.

“Not only that it marks the return [of an Indonesian president] to the high level UN forum, but it is also crucial to affirm Indonesia’s position as a leader in the Global South that consistently advocates for a reform of global governance that is more just and inclusive.”
