ndonesia and Japan have pledged to intensify maritime cooperation in diplomacy and defense amid tensions in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world, the two countries’ foreign and defense ministers said on Monday.

Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin were in Tokyo for the Indonesia-Japan 2+2 meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi.

The meeting was the third of its kind between the four ministers, with previous sessions held in 2015 and 2021.

Minister Sugiono extended his congratulations to the newly appointed Japanese Cabinet under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, stressing that both countries deemed it important to intensify cooperation amid an uncertain global geopolitical dynamic.

“The bilateral meeting between Indonesia and Japan this time is a very strategic [occasion], especially with regional and global situations that are rife with issues ranging from economic competition to political rivalry,” Sugiono said on Monday, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

During the meeting, the ministers also discussed Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) to Indonesia in the form of high-speed patrol boats.

The pledge was first made by then-Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during a visit to Jakarta in January, when he committed to providing Indonesia with two high-speed patrol boats.
