wo Indonesian citizens have been confirmed dead in the fire that engulfed a high-rise residential complex in Hong Kong's Tai Po district, China, an incident that killed hundreds of people and displaced thousands of others.
Indonesian officials in Hong Kong, along with the Indonesian Citizen Protection Task Force under the Foreign Ministry, visited the site of the fire and nearby shelters to check on Indonesian citizens, according to the ministry’s statement on Thursday. The joint team also distributed supplies to all residents affected by the blaze.
The ministry said that two Indonesian citizens died during the incident, while two others were injured, with all four victims being migrant domestic workers.
“The Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong has contacted the families of affected citizens to express their deep concern and condolences, provide clear information and further guidance on the next steps,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said on Thursday.
She added that the consulate general continued to coordinate with local authorities and employment agencies to arrange the repatriation of remains and ensure their rights are met.
The minister later confirmed no additional Indonesian deaths as of Friday. One of the two injured Indonesians had been discharged from the hospital and was staying with a relative of their employer. The other injured Indonesian citizen had been in stable condition and awaiting discharge.
