he government has urged Indonesian citizens in Mexico to remain vigilant after violent clashes erupted between the military and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) following the reported death of cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera.
Authorities have also prepared contingency plans to ensure the safety of Indonesians in the affected areas.
Oseguera, head of one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal organizations, was reportedly wounded during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, on Sunday and later died while being flown to Mexico City.
In retaliation, cartel members blocked roads and torched vehicles and buildings across several cities, Reuters reported.
Mexican authorities later deployed an additional 2,000 soldiers to Jalisco on Monday to restore order. Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch confirmed that at least 25 National Guard troops, a prison guard, a member of the state prosecutor’s office and 30 suspected cartel members were killed in the clashes, AFP reported.
The unrest has raised concerns for foreign nationals, including Indonesians. The Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City reported that 481 Indonesian nationals live across the country, 45 of whom reside in Jalisco.
