View all search resultsfter more than a year in office, President Prabowo Subianto made his maiden official visit to Japan, one of Indonesia’s largest investors and strategic partners, amid the war in the Middle East that has impacted both countries in the energy and economic sectors.
Prabowo arrived at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on Sunday evening, accompanied by several senior ministers, including Coordinating Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, ahead of a series of high-level meetings in Japan’s capital.
In September of last year, the President made a stop in Osaka to see the Indonesia exhibition at the World Expo while en route to New York, the United States, though the Osaka visit was not conducted in his capacity as head of state.
In Tokyo on Monday, Prabowo met Emperor Naruhito in person at the Imperial Palace, where the two leaders held a closed-door discussion and had a luncheon together alongside Naruhito’s younger brother Crown Prince Fumihito.
Foreign Minister Sugiono said on Instagram that the two leaders discussed efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation on key issues, including “energy security and environmental preservation”.
While no concrete details were disclosed, Sugiono noted that Prabowo aims to push Indonesia’s transition to renewable energy amid global volatility, citing the President’s remark about a separate business forum later in the day.
“The President said that Indonesia is moving 'full gear ahead' on its energy transition agenda,” Sugiono told reporters in Tokyo on Monday, noting the importance of energy security and resilience amid the current global uncertainty, as quoted by Kompas.com.
