ndonesia has extended its deepest condolences to France over the death of its peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), reiterating its call for enhanced protection of peacekeeping missions in the war-torn Middle East country.

In a statement on Saturday night, the Foreign Ministry in Jakarta voiced its solidarity with the French government and people following an attack earlier in the day that killed one peacekeeper and wounded three others, describing it as an “unacceptable” act that raised alarm over the continued attacks against the blue helmets.

“We reaffirm our joint commitment to strengthening the protection of UN peacekeepers, as reflected in the joint statement on the safety and security of UN personnel [issued on] 9 April 2026,” the ministry said.

The joint statement, which was signed in the UN headquarters in New York by a broad group of troop-contributing countries to the UNIFIL, came after the death of three Indonesian peacekeepers from two separate blasts in late March in southern Lebanon, one of the fronts in the Middle East war.

The latest attack on the French contingent occurred just two days after a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect on Thursday.

UN secretary-general António Guterres has condemned the attack and urged all parties to respect the “cessation of hostilities and the ceasefire.”
