P

resident Prabowo Subianto has called on ASEAN countries to prioritize dialogue and peaceful resolutions in addressing regional conflicts, as Southeast Asian leaders addressed developments in Myanmar and border tensions during the summit in Cebu, the Philippines.

Prabowo joined his Southeast Asian counterparts for the high-level talks in Cebu late last week, where they discussed ways to strengthen regional cooperation and solidarity amid regional challenges and the energy crisis stemming from the war in the Middle East.

During the retreat session of the summit on Friday, Prabowo called on ASEAN member states to strengthen diplomacy and resolve differences through dialogue, stressing that regional harmony depends on constructive communication and a shared sense of solidarity.

The Indonesian leader also highlighted the need for continued efforts towards peaceful negotiations in regional issues, including border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as the crisis in Myanmar, according to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

“President Prabowo emphasized the importance of constructive communication, including encouraging peaceful talks between Thailand and Cambodia and addressing the situation in Myanmar to maintain stability and harmony in the region,” Teddy said.

In the session, Indonesia reiterated its position that any electoral process in Myanmar must be “inclusive, capable of addressing the problems there, bringing peace, and creating a better situation” and anchored in the Five-Point Consensus, a peace initiative signed by all ASEAN members and Myanmar’s junta in 2021, Foreign Minister Sugiono said after the retreat.

He revealed that ASEAN members agreed to continue engaging Myanmar and encourage efforts to improve its internal situation, saying: “As one family within ASEAN, member states must continue to pay attention, remain concerned, and continue engaging Myanmar so it can find its own path toward improving the situation in the country”.
