ndonesia has called for expanded cooperation between ASEAN and Russia on the economy, food security and energy resilience, as leaders from the regional bloc wrapped up talks in Kazan, Russia, on Thursday with a renewed commitment to deepen engagement with Moscow amid continuing global volatility.
Leading Indonesia's delegation on behalf of President Prabowo Subianto, Foreign Minister Sugiono said ASEAN must broaden its external partnerships to strengthen regional resilience, prosperity and stability in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment.
Addressing the ASEAN-Russia Summit, Sugiono highlighted the far-reaching impact of global conflicts, pointing to disruptions in supply chains, food systems and energy markets that ultimately affect ordinary people.
“Across ASEAN, we are investing in resilience, strengthening supply chains and accelerating our energy transition. To sustain these efforts, ASEAN of course cannot afford insularity. Our resilience is strengthened by the quality of our external partnerships,” Sugiono said.
“To that goal, our right to choose our own partnerships is paramount. We engage all partners on the basis of mutual respect, mutual benefit and independence from bloc politics. […] This is why our dialogue with Russia matters,” he continued.
