ndonesia has urged the Muslim world to establish a mechanism to hold Israel accountable for its actions against Palestinians, as representatives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) gathered recently to respond to Israel’s plans to annex parts of the West Bank and expand illegal settlements.
Represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Anis Matta, Jakarta warned that divisions within the 57-member grouping had allowed Israel to continue its atrocities, saying it was time for the OIC to prove it could function effectively.
“The OIC must build the organization’s credibility, not through condemnations and statements alone, but also through concrete and sustained action,” Anis asserted during the meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last week, as quoted from a statement released by his office on Sunday.
“The OIC must maximize its capabilities and mechanisms to hold Israel accountable for its various crimes, and classify violent acts by illegal settlers as acts of terrorism,” he said.
In the second emergency meeting centered on Palestine this year, dozens of diplomats convened in Jeddah last week to discuss the deteriorating situation in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, as well as ways to strengthen joint Islamic action in response to Israel’s ongoing actions.
The meeting came amid intensified Israeli settlement expansion and displacement in the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem, which Palestinians claim as the capital of their future state.
