2013: First mention
Muhammad Nazaruddin, the former Democratic Party treasurer who was convicted of graft in relation to the Rp 5.8 trillion e-ID project, mentions Setya's name in relation to the alleged markup in the budget.
March 9, 2017: Second mention
At a hearing for the first two suspects in the case, Irman and Sugiharto, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors claim that 37 members of the House Commission II, which oversees home affairs, as well as dozens of other lawmakers and several Home Ministry officials took part in the alleged graft.
April 11, 2017: Acid attack
Novel Baswedan, a senior KPK investigator, is attacked by two unidentified assailants after morning prayers at a mosque near his home in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. He was investigating, among others, the e-ID graft case at that time. Novel was left with severe acid burns and underwent eye surgery.
May 18, 2017: Pushing House inquiry team against KPK
Setya calls on lawmakers to accelerate the establishment of an inquiry to investigate the KPK. His move is seen by many anticorruption activists as a move to weaken the KPK.
July 14, 2017: KPK questioning
Setya appears at the KPK office and is questioned as a witness in the e-ID case.
July 17, 2017: Named suspect
The KPK name Setya a suspect in the case of alleged embezzlement involving the procurement of e-ID cards. Calls urging Setya to resign spring up.
September 2017: Setya skips two summons for questioning at the KPK office for health reasons.
Sept. 22, 2017: Pretrial
A hearing on Setya's pretrial motion challenging his suspect status is held at the South Jakarta District Court.
Sept. 29, 2017: Dodging prosecution
The South Jakarta District Court issues a petition to revoke his suspect status. The ruling judge suggests that the KPK collect new evidence.
Nov. 15, 2017: Warrant issued
The KPK issue a warrant to arrest Setya. The KPK arrive at Setya’s home to arrest him, but he is nowhere to be found.
Nov. 16, 2017: The hospital drama
Setya and Metro TV journalist Hilman Mattauch are involved in a car accident in Permata Hijau and taken to a hospital. Photos of Setya leak on social media, where meme battles ensue. He was later moved to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital the next day under the KPK’s watch.
Nov. 19, 2017: Detained
The KPK detain Setya after a team of doctors from the Indonesian Doctors Association conclude that the politician is fit to undergo questioning. Investigators escort Setya to the KPK office for questioning.
Dec. 13, 2017: First hearing
Setya's first hearing begins, but is disrupted by a medical checkup after Setya complains he is not well, despite a doctor concluding he is fit to be questioned. Previously, Setya attempted to file another pretrial motion, but the graft hearing brought an end to his efforts to overturn his suspect status.
Jan. 10: The KPK name Fredrich and Bimanesh Sutarjo, Setya’s doctor at the private hospital Medika Permata Hijau, suspects of obstructing justice.
Jan. 12: Fredrich fails to appear for questioning at the KPK office in the afternoon and is arrested before midnight.
Jan. 15: Bambang Soesatyo replaces Setya as House speaker.
Jan. 25: Another hearing on Setya’s case is held at the Jakarta Corruption Court.
Jan. 29: A number of witnesses testify regarding Setya's case.
Feb. 8: Fredrich is indicted for the obstruction of justice. Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo denies his involvement in the case at a hearing.
Feb. 19: Another hearing on Setya is held with testimony from various witnesses.
March 8: Bimanesh is indicted for obstruction of justice.
March 22: Accusing ministers
In a trial, Setya alleges that Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, both senior officials of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), each received $500,000 between 2009 and 2012 when they served as House lawmakers.
March 29: The demand
Prosecutors seek 16 years imprisonment and Rp 1 billion in fines for Setya.
April 2: Hospital drama trial
A trial is held on the obstruction of justice regarding the car accident in November and the hospital drama. On trial alongside Fredrich is Setya’s doctor Bimanesh Sutarjo.
April 13: Rejecting responsibility
Setya claims he bears no responsibility for what happened in the procurement of the e-ID cards.
April 24: The verdict
Setya is sentenced to 15 years in prison. The court also orders him to pay Rp 500 million in fines and restitution amounting to the $7.3 million he obtained illicitly.
