Smartfren to Open 1000MW Data Center in Indonesia
Smartfren has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Group 42 (G42), an Abu Dhabi-based company involved in artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

martfren has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Group 42 (G42), an Abu Dhabi-based company involved in artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Local company PT Amara Padma Sehati (APS) will act as one of the local partners, with strengths in the business and technology ecosystem, to host a data center with a 1,000-Megawatt (MW) capacity in Indonesia.
Franky Oesman Widjaja, chairman and CEO of Sinar Mas Telecommunications & Technology said, “Smartfren understands the importance of data centers as the backbone of the development of the digital industry in Indonesia. We are optimistic that this collaboration will realize the construction of data centers in the country and maintain national data sovereignty, which is being carried out by the government of Indonesia.” Sinar Mas Group is the parent company of PT Smartfren Telecom Tbk.
The CEO of G42, Peng Xiao explained, “G42 and Etisalat recently merged their data center businesses to create the largest data center provider in the UAE [United Arab Emirates] with a capacity of around 300MW under construction.” He said, “With our capabilities in cloud computing, we at G42 are happy and ready to work with Smartfren and its partners to support the strategic development of Indonesia's digital infrastructure in accordance with the highest international standards for facility design, operations and data privacy and security.”
The exchange of the MoU between Franky Oesman Widjaja and Peng Xiao was carried out in an event at the Dubai Expo in Dubai, the UAE, on Thursday, and witnessed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Smartfren, along with its company affiliation Moratel, is involved in fiber optic-based connectivity providers and will collaborate with APS and G42 as strategic partners. The partnership is expected to increase the resilience, security and sovereignty of national data, especially owing to the knowledge and experience acquired by the different companies over the years.
The need of data centers and related infrastructure in Indonesia is an urgent matter, as it has increased rapidly. Utilizing centers located in the country will provide the ability to access data more easily, quickly and safely. Moreover, it will complement and strengthen the digital ecosystem to support the rapid development of the digital economy and produce jobs in the field of digitization and Industry 4.0. This Industry 4.0, or the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is the adoption of automatic manufacturing and industrial practices using modern technology, over the traditional system.
