Consumers worry about inflation and fear potential recession, causing them to halt their spending on new gadgets.
lobal demand for gadgets continued to decline for the second consecutive quarter at the end of quarter two this year, having been challenged by rising inflation, a fall in consumer and education spending as well as COVID-19-related lockdowns in China.
In the latest data issued by Canalys, cumulative international shipments for personal computers only reached 105 million units in the second quarter of this year, dropping 14 percent year-on-year (yoy).
Demand for tablets, meanwhile, slipped 11 percent in the same period with just 34.8 million units shipped globally. Worldwide shipments of tablets have been dropping for four quarters in a row.
Chromebook shipping also faced a difficult quarter, plummeting 57 percent to 51.5 million units, following a steep decline in education sector demand.

Himani Mukka, analyst at Canalys, said consumers worried more and more about inflation and feared a recession, causing them to halt spending on new gadgets.
“The rapid fall in consumer and education demand has accelerated the decline in tablet shipments as we move further from the peak of the pandemic,” said Mukka on Wednesday, as quoted in the report.
