he government has invited Chinese firms to help build an interisland super grid connecting power networks across the archipelago, according to leading local business media.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif issued the invitation on Tuesday at the inaugural China-ASEAN Clean Energy Week in Hainan, China, Bisnis.com reported, with an aim to enhance power supply certainty and access to renewable energy in Indonesia.

“The interconnection [of existing grids] will optimize the use of renewable energy sources and create a sustainable energy system throughout Indonesia,” Arifin said in a statement.

The minister said developing a super grid was crucial in light of Indonesia’s topology and that it would help tap renewables.

“Through 2030, 4.7 GW [gigawatts] of solar power will be developed with a long-term goal of 421 GW, or 60 percent of total capacity, by 2060,” he added.

The plan for an ASEAN-wide power grid was a critical part of the 43rd ASEAN Summit under Indonesia's chairmanship this year, Bisnis.com reported.

PLN has expressed support for the plan, with its president director Darmawan Prasodjo saying at the ASEAN-Indo Pacific Forum earlier this month that the state electricity company had implemented various energy transition initiatives. These included withdrawing a 13.3 GW coal power expansion plan, replacing 1.1 GW of coal-fired power plants with renewable energy and increasing the development target for renewable energy plants.
