he government is exploring cooperation with Chinese state-owned electricity utility State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to develop Indonesia’s electricity transmission grid network.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif said the initiative would prioritize Java-Sumatra interconnection transmission lines, which include links to the northern and southern parts of Sumatra.
“Meanwhile, the 500-kilovolt high-voltage direct current [HVDC] electric power transmission system located in Sumatra can only reach South Sumatra,” he told reporters on Thursday.
“Along the [planned] transmission line, there is a lot of renewable energy potential that could be connected to the grid, such as hydroelectric, solar and geothermal power.”

The Sumatran grid is considered better suited to clean energy development than those of other parts of Indonesia, as it is close to abundant renewable resources that could be used for electricity generation.
