Garuda Indonesia is set to open on Nov. 24 a direct flight from Denpasar to Sorong and a return flight stopping in Makassar, South Sulawesi, with plans to increase the new service from twice to thrice weekly in time for the holiday season.
lag carrier Garuda Indonesia is to open a new route on Nov. 24 from Denpasar to Sorong, the capital of Southwest Papua province, to expand its domestic services and boost tourism growth.
The route allows both domestic and foreign travelers to fly directly from Bali to tourist spots in Southwest Papua, which includes the highly popular Raja Ampat Islands, without the need to take flights from either Jakarta or Ambon.
Garuda president director Irfan Setiaputra said the new route would also connect Southwest Papua and South Sulawesi, with a stop in Makassar.
“Flights from Sorong will be integrated with the route that connects Makassar and Denpasar,” Irfan said in a written statement on Wednesday.
Garuda is to fly the Denpasar-Sorong route twice weekly on Wednesdays and Sundays using a Boing 737-800NG aircraft, which has 12 business class seats and 150 economy class seats.
The airline plans to increase its service in December to three times per week, with additional flights on Thursdays to anticipate higher demand during the year-end holidays.
The route operates the direct flights GA868, departing from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar at 2:15 a.m. Central Indonesian Time (WITA) and arriving at Domine Eduar Osok Airport in Sorong at 6:20 a.m. Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT).
